Protection against foot-and-mouth disease
There is currently an increased risk of foot-and-mouth disease in Germany and Austria. Infection has serious consequences, so caution is advised. The virus is highly contagious and is primarily found in cattle, pigs, goats, sheep and other cloven-hoofed animals. The risk can be significantly reduced by taking appropriate precautions, such as adhering to hygiene procedures and well thought-out hygiene techniques. PHT offers farmers and businesses short-term help to contain the risk.
How does foot-and-mouth disease spread?
Foot-and-mouth disease spreads via various routes, which makes containment very challenging. The disease is generally dangerous for cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs or sheep but not for humans. The virus can be transmitted via direct contact between animals or through the air. There is also an enormous risk of transmission through indirect contact, i.e. via clothing, hands, shoes, wheels or feed. It is particularly important to counteract this through hygiene. Transmission can be prevented by thorough cleaning and disinfection using hygiene techniques.
